Morphological variation in Diospyros mespiliformis (Ebenaceae) among different habitats in Benin, West Africa

Interesting morphological traits in tree organs are essential for selecting the best plant germplasm. Variation morphometric of leaf, fruit and seed multipurpose Diospyros mespiliformis were studied two climatic zones Benin using 735 trees from 4 major habitats (provenances) each zone. Morphological trait measurements combined with architectural parameters analyzed two-way ANOVA, principal components analysis hierarchical clustering. Results indicated that significant differences observed between leaves, fruits within terms dimensions across study area. Compared to other three (low dimensions), leaves woodland showed large (µL_leaf=130 mm, µl_leaf=50 mm). Soudano Guinean zone recorded highest values (µd_fruit= 36 mm µl_fruit=30 mm) while Soudanian had lowest 12 µl_fruit=8 More seeds per woodlands parklands. Out these, grouped ebony morphotypes into four clusters. There was no correlation number traits. However, strong positive correlations found characters, bearing (R = 0.96). The provenance significantly affected variations organ-related  Correlation relationships suggested breeding improvement. desired characteristics delineating individuals populations can guide future selection targeted aim improving high-value species agroforestry domestication program.   Key words: Diversity, domestication, environmental factors, descriptors, multivariate analysis.
